What About That Kid Who’s Always Dysregulated? The One Who’s Triggered No Matter What?
Friday October 11, 2024 1:00pm - 3:00pm PDT
**PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A 2-HOUR SESSION in the PHS Auditorium

Full Description of Workshop:
Taking a trauma-responsive approach to student intervention and discipline can mean making a lot of changes to how we respond to students. We can focus on using regulation, we can use neuroscience-aligned interventions, and we can provide significant levels of support, but what about when it’s STILL NOT WORKING? What can we do when all the things that SHOULD be working AREN’T?!

Consultations with school districts across the country, often on their most difficult student cases, have provided Rick & Doris with a unique opportunity to see themes in the deeper layers of how to help staff effectively work with students who are struggling and suffering the most, and often presenting the most challenging behaviors.

A sampling of strategies that will be covered includes: using patterned language during times of regulation in order to desensitize the nervous system, using the trauma-informed principle of control to proactively impact the nervous system, using physiological practices to set a new baseline for the nervous system and brain.

Objectives for the Workshop:
1) Participants will be able to identify the indicators of a student nervous system that requires a different approach
2) Participants will be able to identify the starting point of ANS work required for a given student
3) Participants will be able to describe the two most important steps/strategies to start with for a given student who shows chronic dysregulation
